Almost three years ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I sought God’s healing through prayer and anointing with oil but the lump remained. As part of the treatment I had to undergo a major operation in October 2009 – the procedure was called a radical neck dissection. After the operation they filled me in on how things had gone and what the operation had entailed – while removing all the lymph nodes and all cancer they could see they also had to take my exterior jugular vein, a muscle that ran down the side of my neck and had to sever a major nerve that runs across my shoulder. I then had follow-up radiation and chemotherapy.
I am still required to go for regular checkups as part of the ongoing care and management. Each time you visit the clinic you are likely to see a different oncologist. When Meredith and I went last December I was discussing with the doctor the restriction of movement that I have in my neck and shoulder. I was detailing how I was experiencing a lot of changing sensations as the nerves were regrowing and I was getting some more movement. In this conversation I mentioned that the surgeons had “sacrificed my accessory nerve” during the operation. He looked at me and told me that I hadn’t lost my accessory nerve. After a couple of exchanges where I re-asserted that I had and he told me I couldn’t possibly have, he checked my file. Once he had ascertained that I was correct he told us that he was quite shocked to see me sitting before him, able to do what I could with my arm and shoulder. His feedback was that I “should be looking something like Quasimodo” with my shoulder basically all folded up and lifeless and with very little movement.
It is amazing how God’s healing power works in his timing. Even now, another six months later, there are more changes occurring and I am noticing more improvement.
